The Meaning:
Symbolism has been an integral part of every civilization since the beginning of time. From the mundane to the deeply personal, these symbols are interwoven throughout our daily lives. The prayers, aspirations and memories which we attach to the latter, are what I try to capture in my art. Through the mystery and intrigue of ancient myths and legends, I draw upon those stories and symbols to fuel the inspiration of my metal and fiber work. I invite you to choose the piece that speaks to you, and about you… capture a meaningful memory, choose a talisman of strength or courage, or subtly express your love and respect of the natural world. Art isn’t just something to look at; it’s a deeply personal expression of your inner spirit.
The Process:
In my jewelry, I work mainly in copper, seduced by the inherent warmth and malleability of the metal. Drawing out the rich red, orange, brown and golden hues with the torch never ceases to fascinate and delight the painter in me… it’s like painting with fire! Color is a strong influence in my wet felting as well. Beginning with the combed wool fibers in the form of roving, each new form begins with the laying out of the wool and is then worked with warm water, soap and agitation. I never tire of the magical transformation from loose fiber to a sculptured solid object.
I’m constantly researching and discovering new (to me) myths, legends, and ancient civilizations… losing myself in the mysteries and wonder of those past lives, the way they lived, the art they created. Each new discovery creates an overwhelming desire to capture that magic and draw the past into the present… at least, symbolically. Through the use of this symbolism, I strive to create objects that will provide a tangible expression of your own inner hopes, convictions and aspirations.
The Joy:
It is so joyful and fulfilling when someone discovers that perfect piece that resonates with their own inner spirit! I wish I could keep every piece that I make, … selfish, I know… but there would be an emptiness to that end. Without the shared connection, without knowing that the hours and love which go into each piece are finally fulfilling a purpose, it would be pointless. And it’s okay if you just love it because it’s pretty…..
