Osiris\' Wings (copper)
In one version of an ancient Egyptian myth, the god Osiris, god of the after-life and a symbol of re-birth, was killed by his brother Set and entombed in the trunk of a Tamarisk Tree. Later, his wife Isis freed his body from the tree, briefly bringing him back to life, long enough to impregnate her with their son Horus. In an interesting correlation between myth and real life, some Jewel Beetles will seek out the charred remains of the Tamarisk tree after a forest fire and will lay their eggs in the burned out trunk of the tree. This lends a mutual symbolism of life and rebirth, tying together the myth of Osiris and the stunning Jewel Beetle.
The beautiful wings used here are actually the hard, protective covers (called Elytra) for the underlying and more delicate flying wings. The iridescent green wings dangle freely in front of hand forged copper, framing and protecting them. Note the color variations as the lights hits the wings from different angles. The sterling silver spiral serves as the stud and is complete with a sterling ear nut. The over-all height includes the sterling silver spiral.
