Niobe's Tears: Copper Tear Drop Earrings
In Greek mythology, Niobeâs pride and bragging cost her dearly. During a ceremony honoring the goddess Leto, mother of the twins Apollo and Artemis, Niobe boasted that she herself had not two but fourteen children and continued on to compare herself to Leto. When the goddess Leto got word of this, she was furious and sent her twins to slay Niobeâs children. Writhing in pain from her sorrow, Niobe pleaded with Zeus to end her suffering and he answered by turning her to stone upon Mount Sipylus. To this day, it is said that the water which seeps from the limestone on this mountain is Niobeâs tears.
