Hear the Drums Spirit Vessel
The very first sound we hear is the beat of our own motherâs heart. That steady, comforting rhythm surrounds and soothes us in the womb. It is no wonder that Native Americans revere the drum as a sacred, living entity that echoes the heartbeat of Mother Earth.
The round shape of the Native American drum is a symbol for the circle of life, with the creator in the center and all other forms of life around the rim. The beat of the drum represents the heartbeat of Mother Earth and the spirits of the tree and animal from which it was created.
These very sacred drums are made from the wood of a carefully selected tree and the hide of an animal, such as deer, elk or buffalo. Both the tree and animal are thanked for the life they have given for the creation of the drum and it is believed that these spirits live on within the instrument.
